Depp formed a close bond with director Tim Burton, who has cast him in some of his biggest films to date — Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
The Kentucky native’s performance as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest grossed over $380 million at the box office and the versatile actor was nominated for a Best Actor Golden Globe in late 2006. He went on to star in multiple sequels for Disney.
Depp has been nominated for three Oscars for his work in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Finding Neverland and Sweeney Todd.
The Murder on the Orient Express actor romanced a series of A-Listers, including Winona Ryder, Kate Moss and Lori Allison, whom he was married to from 1983 to 1985, before entering a long-term relationship with actress Vanessa Paradis in 1998. The duo — who welcomed daughter Lily-Rose and son Jack in 1999 and 2002, respectively — split in 2012 after 14 years together.
Depp moved on with his The Rum Diary costar Amber Heard that same year. The twosome tied the knot in February 2015 but called it quits in May 2016. Heard later accused her ex-husband of domestic violence and seemingly wrote about their tumultuous relationship (without naming him) in a 2018 op-ed piece in which she detailed allegedly being a survivor of abuse.
The Fantastic Beasts actor filed a libel lawsuit against The Sun in 2018 after the publication claimed he was a “wife beater.” Two years later, Depp lost the case, but he moved forward with his defamation case against Heard. The trial began in April 2022. Two months later, the jury found that Heard had defamed her ex-husband and ordered her to pay him $15 million in damages.
